This Fire Station was built in 1877 and is the home of Engine # 2 and Ladder # 2. It is located on Branch Street opposite Smith Street and covers sections of the city called the "Highlands" and the "Acre". The origin of the name "Torrent" dates back to the 1840's and comes from the amount of water the steamer could pump-Torrents of water. The station has been renovated several times over the past 123 years and received a Preservation Award in 1997 from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is known as "The West Point" of the Lowell Fire Department. Today, Engine # 2 is the busiest engine in the city with 2449 runs in 1999 and Ladder # 2 is the busiest ladder with 1475 runs for 1999. Engine # 2 is a 1996 E-One 1250 GPM "Sentry" and Ladder # 2 is a 1995 E-One 110' rear mount "Hurricane" ladder truck.

On Sunday, October 25, 1992 it was dedicated to the memory of Lieutenant William P. McCarthy former Secretary/Treasurer Emeritus of the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts State Union. Lieutenant McCarthy passed away in November 1991 at age 83. Bill was appointed to the Lowell Fire Department on August 4, 1946 and retired on January 15, 1973. He was first elected to state office, as Trustee of the Associated Firefighters of Massachusetts, at the convention held in Boston in 1948. At the 1952 convention again held in Boston, Bill was elected Secretary/Treasurer and holds the distinction of being re-elected for 14 consecutive terms (21 years in all). McCarthy is credited for a strong union career that helped break new ground for Lowell firefighters, including special pension packages for firefighters that suffer from heart conditions. In his retirement Bill was still an active charter member of the Lowell Retired Firefighters and was their Trustee at the time of his passing.
