Patrick R. McCabe Sr. – retired Lowell Deputy Fire Chief – the beloved husband of Katherine (Neylon) McCabe, died peacefully at his home, Saturday evening, February 9, 2008. He was 88 years old. Patrick was born in Lowell on April 7, 1919, the youngest of seven children of the late Patrick and Anne (Carolin) McCabe. Patrick married Katherine on June 12, 1943 at the Sacred Heart Church, and together they have celebrated over 64 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, Kay, Mr. McCabe is survived by eight children and their spouses: Robert McCabe, L.F.D. retired and his wife Mary Ellen of Chelmsford, Mary (McCabe) Gill and her husband, Ed of Chelmsford, Kathleen (McCabe) McDonough and her husband, Perry of Methuen, Deputy Chief Patrick R. McCabe, Jr., L.F.D., and his wife, Janice of Lowell, Lieutenant Stephen H. McCabe, L.F.D. and his wife, Kathleen of Lowell, Thomas McCabe and his wife Patricia of Chelmsford, Elisabeth (McCabe) Bullock and her husband, Robert of Lakewood, Ohio, and Meghan (McCabe) Coughlin and her husband Patrick of Lowell, 25 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Patrick R. McCabe, Sr. Retired Lowell Deputy Fire Chief Lowell Patrick R. McCabe, Sr., the beloved husband of Katherine (Neylon) McCabe, died peacefully at his home, Saturday evening, February 9, 2008. He was 88 years old. Patrick was born in Lowell on April 7, 1919, the youngest of seven children of the late Patrick and Anne (Carolin) McCabe. A lifelong parishioner of the Sacred Heart Church, Patrick was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grammar School, class of 1933 and Lowell High School, class of 1937. Patrick married Katherine Neylon on June 12, 1943 at the Sacred Heart Church, and together they have celebrated over 64 years of marriage. A Navy Veteran of WWII, Mr. McCabe enlisted in the United States Navy on June 10, 1942. He was a "Plank Owner" of LCI 362, which was built in the Lawley Shipyard in Boston. His ship was commissioned on July 26, 1943 and was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operation. Machinist Mate First Class McCabe participated in the Eastern New Guinea Operation, the Hollandia Operation, the Western New Guinea Operation, and the Luzon Operation. For his service, he received the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with two Stars, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Star, and the Good Conduct Ribbon. His ship received seven Battle Stars for World War II service. Mr. McCabe returned home from WWII in 1945 and was appointed to the Lowell Fire Department on September 28, 1947, first assigned to Engine 1 on Gorham Street. On April 21, 1957, he was promoted to Fire Lieutenant and transferred to Engine 9 on Rogers Street. Three years later, on October 2, 1960 he was promoted to Captain, and transferred to Engine 8 on Race Street. On February 2, 1964, Captain McCabe was promoted to Deputy Chief, a position he held for over 20 years. He was assigned to Car 2, where he remained until his retirement on April 30, 1984. After retiring, Mr. McCabe started playing golf and enjoyed many rounds with his good friends, Ed Barrows, Leighton Gendron and Arthur Gendron. Mr. McCabe was proud of his Irish Heritage. His parents, Patrick and Anne immigrated to Lowell, MA from Ireland and settled in the Sacred Heart Parish. At Sacred Heart, Mr. McCabe was a member of Holy Name Society. He was deeply saddened when his church closed in 2004. "Papa," who he was affectionately known as to his 25 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, enjoyed the regular Sunday morning gatherings at his home with his entire family. He was an accomplished woodworker, and enjoyed making toys and cradles for his grandchildren.
